A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Updated: Sep 26

A thousand splendid suns is written by Khaled Hosseini, an Afghan-American author. This heart-thumping story depicts brilliantly about two women, Mariam and Laila's fate in a war torn country, and in spite of all the tragedies they come across, they find love, hope and comfort in each other.

I was transfixed by Afghan women's unfailing courage and endurance. I grieved and sobbed throughout the story for Mariam and Laila, but I was mostly astonished by their capacity to hope, love, forgive and move on in life despite all the horrors they had to face in life. The story's theme revolves around Afghan women's rights, sacrifice of life, a sense of love and belongingness, women's education and warfare. I observed that the story had multiple conflict patterns among each character. Throughout the story, hope vs. despair, love vs. hate, apathy vs. empathy were constantly battled against each other.

Mariam's character amazed me every time. The way she endured her battles, her broad capacity to love and forgive, her emotional maturity, the way she became a mother and a father to Laila that she never had. Her character grew on me. She's so incredibly strong and full of beauty.

The author's writing style and vocabulary are effectively utilized to make the readers understand the reality of war and its severe consequences on people, especially on women and a country's future. In conclusion, I believe "A thousand splendid suns" is a masterpiece. I didn't read the story, I lived in the story. I felt as I was beside Mariam and Laila witnessing all the emotions in my own flesh. It felt that very real to me.
